First Aid saves lives! This is usually good enough reason for organisations to ensure that they have adequate first aid provision in the workplace. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 requires employers to provide appropriate first aid cover for their employees. As of 1st October 2009, under the revised HSE training regime an employer can send prospective first-aiders on a course in either First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work. The employer should use the findings of their first-aid needs assessment to ensure the type of training course is appropriate for the circumstances of the workplace. As of 1st October 2009 the First Aid at Work course is 3 days in duration. This course is suitable for delegates who have had no previous first aid training.
This course is aimed at those personnel who already hold a full First Aid at Work certificate and who are coming up to the three-year refresher time limit. Any first aiders who have the appropriate "in date" approved certificate from any first aid training organisation can join the course. The refresher can be taken up to 3 months prior to the expiry date without losing anytime on the validity of the certificate. In addition can be taken up to 28 days after expiry.
This one day course replaces the First Aid Appointed Persons course.
HSE strongly recommends qualified first-aiders to undertake annual refresher training. Although not mandatory, this will help maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to first-aid procedures.
