In the UK, an Operators Licence is required to operate commercial vehicles for hire and reward or a Restricted Licence to operate vehicles for movement of own goods.
To apply for an Operators Licence, the Transport Manager will need to show Professional Competence, which can be gained by passing the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Transport Management Road Haulage examinations. Additionally, a degree in logistics, supply chain management, or business administration can be advantageous but is not mandatory.
How can I gain the CPC qualification?
While self-study is allowed, most people benefit from a structured course offered by approved providers.

Course Format and Duration
Delivery: Classroom based training
Duration: 9 days of study + 1 examination day.
Examination Format
You will need to complete and pass two assessments:
- Paper 1 – Knowledge Test (Multiple Choice – 2 hours).
- Paper 2 – Case Study Assessment (Applied Knowledge – 2 hours 15 mins).
Examinations are held at scheduled times throughout the year and may be taken on paper or online. A pass is required for the qualification to be gained, however resits can be taken on individual papers.
